WMU students have the option of completing the certification as a stand alone program or in conjunction with a Minor in Nonprofit Leadership through the School of Public Affairs and Administration

In order to obtain their certification through WMU students must:

  • Complete an internship of 300 hours in a nonprofit organization (3 credit hours)
  • Pass PADM 2000: Introduction to Nonprofit Leadership
This class provides an overview of American nonprofit organizations, including historical and philosophical foundations of nonprofit organizations, career development and exploration, attributes of successful nonprofit leaders, youth and adult development and program planning.
(3 credit hours; "C" grade or better)
  • Pass PADM 3000: Nonprofit Advancement
This class involves the study and practice of nonprofit advancement, including stakeholder assessment, development of nonprofit communication plans, project management, and fund-raising. Prerequisite: PADM 2000.
(3 credit hours; "C" grade or better)
  • Pass PADM 4000: Seminar in Nonprofit Leadership
This class is an advanced seminar in nonprofit leadership. The topics addressed by this course include nonprofit financial management, human resource development, nonprofit board relations and development, risk management, and environmental assessment. Students must complete PADM 2000 and have senior status before enrolling in this course.
(3 credit hours; "C" grade or better)
  • Attend the national American Humanics Management Institute
  • Participate in the American Humanics Student Association (AHSA)
    • Attend all AHSA meetings.
    • Sit on one AHSA committee or hold office.
    • Perform a minimum of 10 hours per semester of volunteer work or community service.
    • Meet requirements designated in each semester’s fundraising plan.

In order to obtain a Minor in Nonprofit Leadership students must complete an additional 6 credit hours of electives.
